M. Jorge Guimarães, M.D., Ph.D., did his Medical education in Portugal, was a visiting scientist at DNAX Research Institute in Palo Alto,USA, from 1993-1997, and a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University, USA, from 1998-1999. He cloned novel genes and registered biotechnology patents.

In 1999, he founded ALERT Life Sciences Computing, an healthcare software company with contracts in 13 countries. Doctor Guimãraes, who received awards for both his research and business activities, is 46 years old, has four children, visited numerous countries and speaks several languages.
