Abdulkarim A. Almuhanna graduated from King Saud Medical School in mid 80's, and obtained a fellowship in Ophthalmology from King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital - Riyadh. He has worked as Consultant Ophthalmologist before joining King Faisal Specialist hospital in 1996.

In 1998, he obtained a fellowship in Medical Informatics from Harvard - MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology then return back to KFSHRC. He participated in the processes of selection and implementation of CIS at KFSHRC and assigned as the Director of Medical and Clinical Informatics Unit from 2003 - 2008. He served as member in the first board of Saudi Health Informatics Society (SAHI) 2007-2009.
